Mike McCormick
for Valley Center School Board
Passion - Experience - Leadership
My Platform
Please tell readers a little about your background. What experience and insight would you bring to this position?
I recently retired after 36 years of teaching. I taught at Sedgwick High School for 9 years and was the Director of Choral Music; Music Technology at Valley Center High School for 27 years. Both my wife and I come from a family of teachers, our daughters all attended Valley Center Schools and our grandchildren will as well.
What motivated you to run for this position and serve the district?
I always knew that I would be interested in doing this upon retirement because I believe I bring a first person account of how kids are directly affected and react to educational ideas, programs. and opportunities.
What do you believe is the role of a school board member?
To help insure and support our school system in providing the best educational opportunities and the safest environment for our students and staff.
What are some issues that you believe our school district is currently facing?
The pandemic has brought about many concerns. Safety, educational interruption in the “normal process”, economic changes for our students and families, medical and emotional needs. These will take time and patience to recover from. In an ever changing world, we must continue to embrace new technology, new ways to educate and new careers and higher education opportunities for our
students as they enter post-high school life.
How would you like the district to deal with those issues?
There are no easy answers, no quick fixes. We must take each opportunity one at a time and always consider how our decisions will impact kids. All kids. We have come very far and already have programs and dedicated staff working on these needs with kids. We must continue to support and assist in moving forward.
What do you enjoy most about the Valley Center community?
One word: Family. VC is a community that lifts each other up, we take pride in our community and our school system is a huge part of that. “Hornet Family” is a real thing, not just a t-shirt tagline. That is why we moved here and raised a family here. I want to make sure that continues for the next generations to come.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY
I have known Mike for many years. His past teaching experience with the district would make him a great candidate. I would feel comfortable to have him represent my tax dollars. I know his decisions will be based on what's best for the kids
Mike is a man of the VC community with ties throughout the district. He has made a great impact on the school and community already and I believe would do the same as member of the 262 BOE.

No one knows the needs of students, teachers, and staff better than someone who has spent 30+ years as a teacher. Mike's devotion to students and faculty will ensure that he always keeps the people of our schools first in the decisions he makes. I can think of no one I’d rather see on the Valley Center School Board.
